EMOTION

The Spiritual Demise in the Pursuit of Gratification

Emotion—the word is easy enough to utter, yet bearing its weight can be profoundly heartbreaking. Beneath that weight, countless budding dreams sink into oblivion, while the resolute determination of an iron-willed spirit suffers a silent demise. Once emotion raises its formidable hood within the human heart, shielding oneself from the strike of its venomous fangs becomes an arduous task.

It is like a sudden whirlpool, whose irresistible pull unsettles even the brilliance of knowledge, bends the backbone of rational judgement, and leads even a soul devoted to the Creator to follow footsteps that run contrary to its own convictions. At such moments, a person knows precisely which desire will consume them, yet willingly surrenders to that very desire.

What kind of human irrationality is this, in which the fleeting craving for gratification blindfolds the eyes of our natural reason? Why does the voice of conscience grow so faint? Why, even when the light of knowledge remains present, can it not dispel the darkness surrounding our decisions? Are human beings truly the masters of their own desires, or are they prisoners of their own emotions?

And yet, emotion remains one of the timeless hallmarks of humanity. It is through the tender embrace of emotion that a mother’s lap becomes the safest sanctuary on earth; it is through emotion that a father rises like an invincible banyan tree, offering shelter beneath his enduring presence. Love, affection, compassion, and tenderness—all these, too, have their roots embedded in the profound soil of emotion.

Some emotions flow like rivers, soothing the thirsty mind and carrying life forward in their currents. Others arrive like sudden tidal surges, forgetting their own boundaries and breaking through the shores that were meant to contain them.

The most perilous emotion is the one that a person mistakes for a necessity. For then, the boundary between gratification and genuine need begins to disappear; desire assumes the role of judge over reason, while conscience stands by in silence, reduced to the position of a mere spectator.

Some emotions, therefore, are profoundly restless and insecure. They arrive, wreak havoc, and depart—leaving behind scars upon the heart. Even as a person painstakingly attempts to heal those wounds, they repeatedly find themselves returning to the very mistakes that caused them.

The problem, then, does not lie in emotion itself, but in its lack of restraint.

A person devoid of emotion may survive through reason, but cannot truly live as a human being. Conversely, when a person surrenders completely to emotion, they risk losing the very humanity that defines them.
