The date April 1st is annually celebrated as April Fool’s Day/All Fool’s Day. This day is celebrated like an international tradition as a day of lighthearted pranks, jokes and fun. However, not everything that looks simple and playful is always safe and normal.
This seemingly harmless day actually hides a very dark and disturbing history. In fact, such an incident is not even much talked about.
It all started approximately on April 1st, 1492 or in 1572 following the fall of Granada, almost at the end of the Islamic rule in Spain. When Muhammad XII (Boabdil) surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, marking the end of 800 years of Muslim rule (Al-Andalus) in the Iberian Peninsula, major incidents involving the deaths and forced conversions into Catholicism of many Muslims (Moriscos/Moorish population) in Spain occurred around April 1st, often linked to the culmination of the Spanish Reconquista. Because, the Christians of the west wanted to wipe out Islam entirely from the country. During this time, in one case, the Christian armies told the Muslims that they would be safe if they took shelters in a mosque. The Muslims even wondered whether this ploy was a deceit or not. Yet, they were somehow convinced to take preparations to go to the mosque for their safety. To their horror, the Christians then set the mosque on fire, resulting in the tragic deaths of thousands of Muslims.
According to another source, on 1st April, after taking all the necessary preparations, the Muslims took their essential belongings and walked towards the quay side to check the ships as requested. After that, the Christians looted and set their houses on fire. Not only that, before the Muslims even got to the ships, those traitors had set the ships on fire as well. Subsequently, the Christians attacked the Muslims and killed them all – men, women and children. Consequently, the blue sea water turned into a blackish red hue. Lastly, they celebrated this carnage. From that year onwards, these people observe this day as April Fool’s Day. As if, they celebrate this day on “occasion” of “making a fool” out of the Muslims. In a word, they not only betrayed the Muslim people and the Muslim armies at Gharnatah, but also they have shown a shameful betrayal to the entire Muslim Ummah & the entire humanity.
This tragic incident of the heinous treachery of the Catholics and the bloody massacre of the Muslims ultimately symbolize & prove the disgrace and cowardice of the culprits. Still, they have the audacity to shamelessly celebrate this day with a reason to keep up this kind of spineless spirit.
Besides, there are many more backstories of humiliation & reinforcing social conformity in the cynical history of this day. For instance, the “April Fish/(Poisson d’Avril)” in France, “Fool’s Errands” in France, Roman ancient festival of “Hilaria”, Scottish “Huntigowk Day/(Hunting the Cuckoo/Fool)”, the “San Seriff Island” hoax in 1977, etc. Moreover, the celebration of this day gives harmful malpractices like, lying, misinformation, propaganda, humiliation, harmful or hurtful behaviour, bullying and the jerks, pranksters, bullies, liars & the ones responsible for all these an excuse for their baseless and annoying behaviour in the name of “It’s just a joke/prank!”. Ultimately, this results in serious accidents, hurt feelings, broken self-esteem, self-confidence & self-love, trust issues, confusions regarding what to trust and what not to even in serious situations, etc. Also, those who celebrate this day despite knowing all about the truth of this day are the actual baseless, devoid of common sense clowns and brainless, dead-humour jokes to the morality and humanity.
Overall, we can conclude that, not everything is a joke or a prank, not everything is just a mere myth or a theory, not everything is worthy of enjoyment & celebration and not everything deserves to be commemorated. In other words, celebrating these kinds of days doesn’t make any sense in any way. Thus, celebrating this day being ignorant of its actual history is like an invalidation and insult to the slaughter and sufferings of our Muslim brothers and sisters, and also like a support to such inhumanity. Worst of all, we would be celebrating our own downfall. That’s why, we should be aware of what to celebrate and what not to.
