Violence against women and children in Bangladesh is increasing day by day. Almost every day, reports of rape, sexual harassment and child abuse appear in newspapers, television and social media. The most alarming issue is that in many cases the crime does not stop at rape or assault. The victim’s tragic end is often death. Because of lengthy legal procedures and social pressure, many victims fail to receive justice. In many cases, victims remain silent due to shame, fear and social stigma. As a result, offenders become even more emboldened. To prevent rape, rapid and visible justice is essential. Investigations must begin immediately after a complaint is filed and the judicial process should move quickly to ensure justice. In cases involving the rape of children and adolescents, separate fast-track tribunals and proper rehabilitation systems are necessary. If the accused are proven guilty, the death penalty should be enforced as the minimum punishment so that criminals truly fear the consequences of such crimes. Punishments should be carried out publicly or broadcast on television and social media so that society clearly sees the consequences. Strict enforcement of such laws can help reduce crime and also change social attitudes.
Ensuring the safety of victims along with providing medical treatment and psychological support is a responsibility that both the state and society must fulfill.
